  • Leadership
  • Love, Compassion, Empathy
  • Excellence
  • Honesty, Integrity
  • Teamwork
  • Commitment
  • Respect
  • Responsibility

These are listed in no particular order. For the next eight weeks, one core value will be examined each week and put into practical perspective. While most of us understand the general implications of these words, how do we put them to use in our everyday lives?

To me, respect is the foundation that gives rise to all the others. Oxford Languages tells us that respect is:

  • A deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.
  • Due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others.
  • To admire someone or something deeply as a result of their abilities, qualities, or achievements.

Fair enough, now we have a starting point, but how do we apply these lovely thoughts to everyday life? Equally important is the question of how to teach it. The obvious answer is to teach by example, and that is our starting point. Three broad methods are as follows:

  1. Model Respect - Children often imitate adults, so show respect to others as well as to ourselves.
  2. Set Rules - Establish rules of acceptable behavior at home or in the classroom and consistently enforce consequences when rules are broken.
  3. Golden Rule - Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. In other words, treat others how you would like to be treated.

These are some simple, universal, easy-to-remember guidelines that we follow here at Majestic and that families can reinforce at home. Another of our pillars is teamwork, and this offers a golden opportunity for teachers, coaches, and families to work as a team to help our kiddos understand and practice respect.
