Commitment
Commitment is a large part of gymnastics, and here at Majestic, it happens to be one of our core values. Most of our recreational athletes come to the gym for one hour a week. The parent and child need to understand that if gymnastics is something they are serious about, they both need to come together and be committed to the sport.
What Commitment Looks Like
What this means is practicing at home every day. As a coach, I get a lot of questions about what to practice at home, and the answer is quite simple:
- Stretching: The athlete should be stretching every single day. Flexibility is the number one prevention to injury.
- Handstands: The athlete should also be doing handstands daily. Handstands are the most important skill in gymnastics as they teach body control.
- Strength Training: The athlete should also be doing strength training at home as well, preferably, a lot of arm and core workouts.
Discipline
Discipline is another big benefit of gymnastics. The athlete achieves discipline by doing what is being asked of them. If they want to get better at their skills, they must be disciplined at home and practice regularly.
Work Ethic
Our athletes all learn good work ethic at Majestic. We teach every child that if they want to achieve their goals, it takes hard work, and hard work is not easy. We also teach them to be honest about how many repetitions they are told to do.
I tell my athletes that if they cheat, they are only hurting themselves in the long run.
Life Lessons
We hope that whatever the athlete learns at Majestic, they take it with them through their life and apply it in the future.
